Scholarship recipients are selected based on a combination of factors, the most important of which are the applicant’s core GPA and demonstrated financial need which includes, but is not limited to, the receipt of a Federal Pell Grant award.  The Greater Newark Scholarship Program reserves the right to conduct interviews, utilize standardized test scores and personal essays, and consider the strength of the applicant’s curriculum and extra curricular activities. In addition, the Greater Newark Scholarship Program may consider the applicant’s gender as an additional factor in order to provide meaningful participation by males and females in the program.

An initial scholarship award is up to $5,500 for the freshman year. The recipient may apply in three subsequent years for the renewal of a scholarship. If the recipient satisfies the applicable renewal requirements, which are described below, and the NJAE determines that there are sufficient scholarship funds available, the student may be eligible to receive up to $5,000 in their sophomore year, up to $4,000 in their junior year, and up to $3,500 in their senior year. The Greater Newark Scholarship award may be applied toward the following college expenses: tuition and fees, room and board, and books.  The intent of the Greater Newark Scholarship Program is to mitigate but not completely eliminate the need for student loans each year and/or the student to earn income via part-time employment during the school year or full-time employment during the summer.  The amount of each scholarship will be based on the selection committee’s review of the recipient’s total college expenses, their Pell Grant award, other scholarships awarded to the recipient, and other sources of non-loan financial aid granted to the recipient.  Awards are intended to provide the recipient with an amount of financial aid such that, after taking into account all sources of non-loan financial aid the recipient will receive (including the Greater Newark Scholarship), the recipient will still have to finance a minimum of $3,000 per year. As a consequence, the amount of the Greater Newark Scholarship may be less than $5,500, $5,000, $4,000, and $3,500 in their respective freshman, sophomore, junior and senior year. If the applicant’s unmet financial need (excluding the Greater Newark Scholarship) is less than $3,000, the applicant will not be eligible to receive a Greater Newark Scholarship.
