My experience in the student leadership program was interesting and informative. These are two descriptive words that stand out in my mind about the whole program. There were times in the student leadership program when I questioned myself about being part of the class, but I overcame this once I reflected on the many things that we have learned. From the guest speakers to the projects, the class has always kept me thinking.

First, the program was very informative. I took in so much information over the course of the semester that I sometimes feel overwhelmed, but in a good way. With so many leaders expressing their feelings and ideas, I thought that opinions would start ethical wars. To my surprise, everyone in the class respected each other's ideas because everyone realized that we are all important to each other's growth as leaders.


The thing that stood out to me the most was the importance and impact of certain guest speakers. Dr. Derek Lane is one in particular that stood out in my mind. His presentation was about risk taking and different leadership styles. He went over how important it was for leaders to sometimes take risks to gain credibility and attention from their followers. I am a strong believer in that aspect of leadership and it helped reassure my own confidence in my style of leadership. The different leadership styles that he expressed helped me develop a sense of where I fall into place in the leadership realm. It explains why I do certain things when I am leading and helps me restrain myself from making mistakes that clash with my leadership style. Ms. Mildred Bailey's presentation on diversity was also very exceptional. She gave us examples on how to deal with diversity in a positive manner. In leadership, diversity must be addressed so a problem is not created. Her examples on life situations and other leadership roles put the class in a relaxing atmosphere that let us speak out about our diversity experiences and problems. Student leadership is arguably the most beneficial extracurricular activity a person can perform while in college. Though there are no grades and zero credits to earn, the experience gained from a leadership role will be valuable for a lifetime. A college leader is thrown into a learning environment that encourages hands-on experience. Planning, decision making, communicating, and working as a teammate are all skills that you will build as a student leader. Trust me, you don’t build these portable leadership skills when studying for an exam or sitting in a lecture.

As a student leader, you are in the unique position to make a difference on your campus. This is the moment to think big and to exert your voice from a position of influence. Think about it, right now you can put into action changes that will impact the entire campus community and improve the student organization in which you are part. It is now up to you to grasp some of the various opportunities that are within your reach.

What it Takes to Lead

To fulfill an organization’s mission it takes teamwork, hard work, and time from each member. That is why it is important to utilize your time, your team, and your talent efficiently. Ask, what can I do to achieve higher level results? What must I contribute? How can I be more productive?

If your answer to these questions were to seek guidance, training, and mentorship, you are on the right track. Since time is valuable to each member of a group, it is vital to work on increasing personal performance thereby reducing the amount of effort and time spent unproductively by the group.

Obviously motivation, willingness to contribute, and follow through are key to any student leaders’ success. However, there is much more to leading a successful student organization. Success is about harnessing group talents, working smarter, and communicating often. In these pages you will find many valuable insights that will assist you during your time as a student leader.
